Cluster 5 - 'Climate, Energy and Mobility'
‘Climate, Energy and Mobility’ is the fifth cluster under the Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness Pillar of the Horizon Europe Work Programme.
Cluster 5 – ‘Climate, Energy and Mobility’
The overarching driver for cluster ‘Climate, Energy and Mobility’ is to accelerate the twin green and digital transitions and associated transformation of Europe’s economy, industry and society with a view to achieving climate neutrality in Europe by 2050. This encompasses the transition to greenhouse gas neutrality of the energy and mobility sectors by 2050 at the latest, while boosting their competitiveness, resilience, and utility for citizens and society. Europe has been at the forefront of climate science and is committed to keep delivering the knowledge for enabling efficient pathways and just transitions to climate neutrality.
Cluster 5 Expected Impacts
Activities in Cluster 5 will contribute to all Key Strategic Orientations (KSOs) of Horizon Europe’s Strategic Plan:
- Promoting an open strategic autonomy by leading the development of key digital and, enabling and emerging technologies, sectors and value chains to accelerate and steer the digital and green transitions through human-centred technologies and innovations;
- Restoring Europe’s ecosystems and biodiversity, and managing sustainably natural resources to ensure food security and a clean and healthy environment;
- Making Europe the first digitally enabled circular, climate-neutral and sustainable economy through the transformation of its mobility, energy, construction and production systems;
- Creating a more resilient, inclusive and democratic European society, prepared and responsive to threats and disasters, addressing inequalities and providing high-quality health care, and empowering all citizens to act in the green and digital transitions.
Horizon Europe Cluster 5 – Destinations
Cluster 5 ‘Climate, Energy and Mobility’ will contribute to the expected impacts through the following six destinations:
Destination 1 – Climate sciences and responses for the transformation towards climate neutrality
About this destination: Destination 1 fosters climate science and thus helps to identify effective and efficient pathways and responses to climate change.
Destination 2 – Cross-sectoral solutions for the climate transition
About this destination: Destination 2 supports different cross-cutting technologies and solutions for climate, energy and mobility applications.
Destination 3 – Sustainable, secure and competitive energy supply
About this destination: Destination 3 focusses mainly on energy issues and on making energy supply more sustainable, secure and competitive;
Destination 4 – Efficient, sustainable and inclusive energy use a smart energy system
About this destination: Destination 4 also focusses on energy issues by reducing energy demand of buildings and industry and enabling their more active role in a smart energy system.
Destination 5 – Clean and competitive solutions for all transport modes
About this destination: Destination 5 improves the performance of transport modes and mobility solutions. This can be done by increasing the competitiveness and climate/environmental performance of different transport modes.
Destination 6 – Safe Resilient Transport and Smart Mobility services for passengers and goods
About this destination: Destination 6 also aims to improve the performance of transport modes and mobility solutions by advancing mobility services and solutions at system level for passengers and goods.
